Earlier this week Nintendo announced they would be doing a Nintendo Direct on September 12th.
Over the course of about 90 minutes NIntendo dropped so many exciting announcements for fans to look forward to. From revealing the title of the upcoming Mario movie (The Super Mario Galaxy movie), to a release date for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (Dec 4th), here's our picks for the top three biggest announcements from the latest Nintendo Direct!
Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2
Two absolutely beloved Mario titles from the Wii are coming to the Switch in one great bundle.
As part of the celebration of Mario's 40th anniversary, Nintendo announced a lot of Mario-related news, but the reveal of both galaxy titles coming to Switch is particularly exciting.
Super Mario Galaxy was a pivotal release, introducing Rosalina in this super fun 3D platformer where Mario explores different planets to reclaim the Power Stars that have been stolen by Bowser. Super Mario Galaxy 2 built on everything that was already great about the original title, but added Yoshi to the mix.
Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 come out October 2nd, 2025.
Donkey Kong Bananza - Expansion
Possibly the best Switch 2 title available right now is Donkey Kong Bananz, and now there's even more to enjoy!
There is brand new DLC coming to this title in the form of Donkey Kong Banaza DK Island & Emerald Rush!
As the name suggests, a new Island is added to the game, and is the home to Donkey Kong and many of his friends.
Emerald Rush is a time-based challenge where DK must collect as much green ore as he can. Like in the main game, there's fossils to collect. In Emerald Rush the fossils will give you "perks" with different advantages like increasing the amount of emeralds dropped by bad guys.
This one was a big surprise considering how recently DK Banazna was released. But is very much welcome news considering how fun this title is. If you've found out all the fossils, unlocked all the animal-based power ups, and beat all the bosses, now there will be even more to do in this fun DK world.
The paid DLC launches on September 12th, 2025.
The Virtual Boy Is Back?!?!?
This easily the most shocking news, because who could've predicted that Nintendo would resurrect one of its most fabled consoles, the Virtual Boy?
This thing was probably a little too ahead of its time when it came out in 1995. It had a relatively small game library and never came close to the success of the Super Nintendo or Game Boy (the main consoles at the time).
Fast forward to 2025, Nintendo is bringing this back in a very interesting way. Through your My Nintendo account, you can purchase an accessory (a fancy version and a cardboard one) that will hold your console, and allow you to play Virtual Boy titles.
We have a bit of a wait before we can go hands-on with this one (the hardware releases Feb 17th alongside of the game library within Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack), but it will be well worth it for those who never had the chance to try out this gaming gem!
