The Belkin Charging Grip is here, and it's perfect for long road trips and lengthy gaming sessions. With a power bank that delivers up to 30 watts of power to your Nintendo Switch 2, those long layovers will never be a problem again.
Pros
- 1.5X (or more!) extended play time
- USB-C Battery pack can charge other devices
- Grip is compatible with dock
Cons
- Joy-Con grips not the most comfortable
- Battery percentage only displays momentarily when plugged or unplugged
- May not fit in all cases
Now You're Playing With Power
The Belkin Charging Grip was made to extend your Switch 2's battery life, and it definitely lives up to the hype in this regard. The box claims the 10,000 mAH battery will boost your playtime by 1.5X, but in our testing we got nearly double the battery life, with 7 hours of playtime with the battery and only 3.5 without (Note, device set to minimum brightness).
The battery pack has uses beyond just charging your Switch 2. As it connects via a USB-C connection, it can charge nearly any USB-C device, such as your controllers, your phone, or your earbuds. This makes it a great portable power option when you're trying to travel light.
On the back of the battery pack you will find a black circular display that shows how much power you have left, but unfortunately the percentage only appears when you plug the battery pack into a device or to be charged itself, so if you want a status update on how much power you have left, you'll have to unplug it or plug it in.
Grip it and Rip it
The grip itself comes in three different colours; white, black, and grey, giving you options to find a grip that best fits your personal style. It is very easy to install, and looks really slick.
While the battery is great, the grip itself has a couple of shortcomings.
We found that the Joy-Con grips were not the most comfortable in our hands, though you can still reap the battery benefits by installing just the Switch 2 console grip.
The grip fits snugly on your Switch 2, but with the Joy-Con covers installed the added bulk means your Switch 2 may not fit inside some travel cases. Belkin thought of that however and sells a matching travel bag that will fit your Switch 2 with the grip installed. And when we say matching, we mean it; they come in the same three colours as the grips.
If you want to use the Joy-Con covers but don't like them in your hands, the grip does not impede the use of the Switch 2's kickstand whatsoever.
Unboxing The Belkin Charging Grip
Upon opening the box you will find the charging grip, the battery, and instructions on how to install it. Before your first use you'll want to plug in the battery pack with a USB-C cable (not included) and leave it to charge.
While you wait, you can install the grip in three easy steps.
First, remove the Joy-Cons from your Switch 2. Next, slide the Joy-Con grips over the Joy-Cons. The grips have holes for the buttons on the Joy-Cons, so you'll know you've done it right once the buttons are slotted in.
Once the Joy-Con grips are installed, you can move on to the rear cover for the main body of the Switch 2. Just like with the Joy-Cons, line up the holes to leave all buttons and the kickstand accessible. If you find the kickstand or any buttons inaccessible you may have put the cover on upside down (we speak from experience).
Once the battery pack is charged, attach it magnetically to the back of the rear cover and plug it into the Switch 2 via the top USB-C port. In over 10 hours of play-testing (rough gig eh!) the battery pack always felt secure.
Is It Worth It?
The Belkin Nintendo Switch 2 Charging Grip is a great accessory for extending your playable Switch 2 time when on the go. It's simple to install and use, and the battery pack can charge your USB-C accessories and electronics as well.
