When Google introduced the original Pixel Fold, it felt like a bold first draft. The follow-up brought better durability and some new AI tricks.
With the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Google is tackling the two biggest complaints about foldables: thickness and weight.

This new generation is nearly 1mm thinner (measuring just 10.1 mm folded and 5.0 mm unfolded), roughly 10% lighter, and built around a new aerospace-grade, ultra-high-strength steel hinge designed for extreme structural performance.
I've spent the past week testing the Pixel 11 Pro Fold in Winnipeg. I've been running it through real-world multitasking workflows, testing camera samples side-by-side with the Pixel 11 Pro, and evaluating whether Google's $2,500 Canadian flagship foldable is actually worth the investment.
Design and Durability: Thinner, Lighter, and 3x Tougher
Right from the introduction of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Google was comitted to make the foldable as thin as it could be. In fact, it was just a few milimetres thicker than the Pixel 9 Pro at the time.
Now, Google has shaved off even more bulk while extended the visible area of the screen.
At 10.1 mm folded and 5.0 mm unfolded, the fold is comfortable to hold one-handed while scrolling through social or flipping through an ebook when it's unfolded. The chassis uses an ultra-durable composite matte back paired with a satin spacecraft-grade aluminum frame and full IP68 dust and water resistance.
Google claims the phone is 3x more durable than its predecessor. The outer display is shielded by ultra-durable glass ceramic cover glass, while the inner screen utilizes thicker ultra-thin glass (UTG) to reduce crease visibility and improve long-term resilience.
The Dual-Pill Camera & HiLight LED
On the back, the foldable features a distinct dual-pill camera housing. It also incorporates Google's new HiLight ambient LED array around the flash module.
When the phone is closed and resting face-down in "Flip to Shhh" mode:
- Favorite Contact Alerts: You can assign custom color glows in Google Contacts so you know when your partner, kids, or coworkers call via the Phone app or WhatsApp.
- Hands-Free Gemini Status: HiLight pulses softly when asking Gemini questions across the room, giving you visual feedback that the AI is processing your query without waking the screens.
This is a fun throwback to the BlackBerry era for anyone who remembers colour-coded BBM contacts. I'd love to see a Pixel Drop down the road introduce more customization. For example, having a custom flash and light combo for a specific email account, rather than just having lights correspond to certain contacts.
Dual 3,600-Nit Displays: True Outdoor Visibility
Both screens on the Pixel 11 Pro Fold have received significant brightness upgrades:
- Outer Display: A 6.5-inch Super Actua OLED panel (19.5:9 aspect ratio, 1080 x 2342 resolution at 399 PPI) with a 1–120Hz variable refresh rate. It operates just like a standard flagship slab phone when closed.
- Inner Display: An expansive 8.0-inch Super Actua Flex OLED panel (2076 x 2152 resolution at 372 PPI) featuring a 1–120Hz smooth refresh rate and the thinnest bezels ever shipped on a Pixel Fold.
Both screens now peak at 3,600 nits (a 20% increase over the previous generation), making maps, photos, and emails perfectly legible under direct midday sunlight.
I did take this outside on a bright sunny day and found the outer screen to be more legible than the inner screen, but that mostly had to do with the reflectiveness of the inner screen of the Fold.
Multitasking: Split Screen, Drag & Drop, and Bubbles
The real reason to buy an 8-inch foldable is what it lets you accomplish on a single screen. Android 17 on the Pixel 11 Pro Fold introduces several dedicated productivity tools:
- Split Screen Flexibility: You can pair two apps side-by-side, resize them beyond standard boundaries, or double-tap the central divider bar to swap application positions instantly.
- System-Wide Drag and Drop: When running Split Screen, you can drag photos directly from Google Photos or web links from Chrome straight into Messages or email drafts without switching windows.
- App Bubbles: You can turn up to 5 apps (like your browser, Gemini, or Calendar) into floating bubbles that hover over your active apps, letting you check quick details and jump back without disrupting your flow.
Bubbles are different than widgets, allowing you to have the full app floating in a "bubble" on screen. You can have multiple bubbles running at once and they're all tucked away in the bottom right corner of the screen. But quick to launch being just a tap away.
Upgraded Triple Camera System: 56% More Light
Foldable cameras historically lagged behind standard flagship phones, and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold closes the gap, though isn't as robust as the Pixel 11 Pro:
- Main (Wide): A new 48 MP sensor with an 85° FOV and a 56% improvement in light sensitivity over the previous Fold, delivering cleaner night shots and richer dynamic range.
- Ultrawide: 10.5 MP with an ultra-wide 127° FOV and dedicated Macro Focus.
- Telephoto: 10.8 MP 5x optical telephoto lens pushing up to 30x Super Zoom, with optical quality maintained at 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x, and 10x.
With Google Pixel phones specifically, the specs don't tell the story. Ever since the Pixel 4a, I've felt like the combination of hardware and image processing software all happening with a snap is so powerful that Pixel photos just stand out as being fabulous.
Magic Capture & More Fun Camera Features
The foldable camera leverages the Tensor G6 processor for Magic Capture. You tap record to shoot a brief video clip, and the phone scans through hundreds and hundres for frames behind the scenes to automatically extract sharp, unblurred HDR still photos.

Instant View & Made You Look are genuinely helpful camera features. In the Camera app, Instant View shows recently snapped photos on the left half of the inner screen while keeping your live viewfinder active on the right. For parents, Made You Look plays playful, interactive animations on the outer screen that react when little ones smile, making candid kid photography effortless. Both of these features existed on previous versions of the Fold, but on the 11, we now have more animations than were previously available for Made You look.
The Fold also introduces Live Transcribe with American Sign Language (ASL). When opened in tabletop book mode, you can sign directly into the inner camera, and the phone translates sign language into text in real time while displaying the conversation on the outer cover screen for face-to-face dialogue.

The Verdict: Are You Folding?
At $2,499 CAD, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is an unapologetic luxury device. It costs $1,000 more than the standard Pixel 11 Pro, and you get 30x zoom rather than the 120x Pro Zoom found on the slab Pro.
However, if you want a true two-in-one productivity device that fits comfortably in your pocket without feeling like a brick, Google has delivered its most compelling foldable to date.
Between the 1mm thinner profile, the brilliant 3,600-nit inner canvas, and desktop-grade multitasking tools like Bubbles and Split Screen, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is finally a folding phone that feels ready for everyday life.
