Just when you thought you could safely curb your habit of buying special edition controllers - PlayStation dropped an absolute gem.
The Icon Blue Special Edition DualSense controller is a not to PlayStation's gaming history over the past 30 years and is basically a must-have for PlayStation collectors.
Heighten Your Senses
The controller was originally announced by PlayStation on October 7th alongside some other very cool, limited edition gaming gear.
With a quick glance, the glossy PlayStaiton shapes on the touchpad are the stand-out feature but as you get hands on with the controller, you realize there's a few extra things that will stand out to eagle-eyed gamers.
Shades of Blue
The controller features several different and distinct shades of blue. When I very first saw this controller it was giving me God of War Ragnarök vibes. Then it reminded me of the PlayStation studios boot screen. And then I realized it's all of those things and more since these shades of blue are in fact subtle nods to various shades of of the colour that have been part of PlayStation's DNA over the years. While the 30th anniversary edition controller channeled the grey and multi-coloured vibe of the original PlayStation, this Icon Blue edition encapsulates modern PlayStation history.
Console Origins
I must have missed this as part of the original announcement, but I had no idea there were Japanese characters on the controller until I unboxed it. They were a delightful surprise and I instantly pointed my Google Lens at the glyphs to decipher the message. It, of course, says PlayStaiton. The Katakana characters are a super cool nod to origins of Sony and their gaming history.
Feel and Fun
There's something very special about the feel of a PlayStation controller. Particularly with the design of the DualSense controllers, beyond their incredible haptics, the texture of the grip of each controller feels so unique. Have you ever studied it closely? The Icon Blue edition, just like other DualSense controllers features tiny PlayStation shapes. You have to look really close to ientify the X, Square, Circle, and Triangle that have been synonymous with the console since the very first edition, but they're there!
