Pixel 11 Pro W Hilight Active Using Gemini

If you've been using Android long enough, you probably remember the subtle notification LED that let you check for messages without turning on your screen. It was a great feature on BlackBerry phones (though not as good as Brickbreaker and BBM).

Google has brought that concept back for its 2026 flagship tier in a much smarter, ambient form.

It's called HiLight, and it's an exclusive hardware feature built into Google's entire Pro family: the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

Here is how HiLight works, what it actually does, and which devices get it.

How HiLight Hardware Works

HiLight is a physical array of color-coded ambient LED lights built directly around the rear camera flash module.

Designed to pair with Google's "Flip to Shhh" gesture, HiLight activates when your phone sits face-down on a desk, nightstand, or table. Instead of lighting up your display or making noise, it projects a gentle, glanceable glow on the back of your phone.

2 Core Daily Features at Launch

Google designed HiLight around two practical, distraction-free use cases:

  • VIP Contact Call Cues: Assign custom color glows to your essential contacts. When your phone is face-down and a family member, babysitter, or boss calls, HiLight glows in your assigned color. This is integrated across Phone by Google and WhatsApp, giving you immediate visual context without flipping your phone over.
  • Hands-Free Gemini Feedback: When querying Gemini via voice from across the room, HiLight pulses with distinct visual patterns to signal when the assistant is listening, thinking, or responding hands-free.

Device Availability: Which Phones Get HiLight?

  • Included: Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
  • Omitted: Base Pixel 11.

The entry-level Pixel 11 skips HiLight hardware to keep its entry price point lower. Which is too bad it's not across the full lineup because it's a unique/defining feature that was getting a lot of buzz in early leaks.

On all three Pro models, HiLight comes standard. Google has also noted plans to expand HiLight functionality in future Pixel Drops to cover favorited text notifications down the road.
