Foldable phones have been out in the wild for years now, but Apple has finally entered the chat!
The tech giant officially pulled back the curtain on the iPhone Duo, marking the first foldable iPhone in company history. It's a completely reimagined hardware design that blends a pocketable everyday phone with a massive inner canvas for multitasking, gaming, and creative work.
There's a ton to unpack with this one, so let's take a closer look and break things down!
When Does the iPhone Duo Come Out?
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo go live at 5 a.m. PT on Friday, October 16, with devices officially hitting store shelves on Friday, October 23.

Two Displays: One Pocketable, One Massive
The core idea behind the iPhone Duo is giving you two distinct screens without making the phone feel like a thick brick in your pocket.
- The Outer Screen (5.4 inches): When folded shut, it's compact and easy to use one-handed. Despite its smaller footprint, it still gives you 90 percent of the screen real estate of an iPhone 18 Pro.
- The Inner Screen (7.6 inches): Open it up, and it becomes the thinnest iPhone ever made. This screen is 50 percent larger than an iPhone 18 Pro Max, turning your phone into an iPad Mini-like workspace for watching videos, reading, or running two apps side-by-side.
Both screens feature bright 3,000-nit outdoor displays, ProMotion (for buttery-smooth scrolling), and the same aspect ratio, so your apps scale naturally between the two.
Plus, the inner display gets a matte nano-texture finish. That cuts down on harsh glare and helps make the middle screen crease significantly less noticeable when you run your fingers across it. And for digital artists and note-takers, Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is arriving later this year!
Built to Last: Titanium, Tough Hinges, and No Crease Anxiety
The biggest hesitation people usually have with foldable tech comes down to durability: Will the hinge hold up? What happens to the screen over time?
Apple is tackling this head-on with grade 5 titanium construction and a precision hinge built from over 100 components. Inside, the display uses custom flexible layers designed to glide past each other like the pages of a book, which actively relieves bending stress every time you open and shut it.
On the outside, Ceramic Shield 2 protects the exterior glass with triple the scratch resistance of previous models, and the entire phone carries a full IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating—a massive engineering win for a folding device!
Clever Camera Tricks You Can Only Do on a Foldable
Because the iPhone Duo can fold and stand on its own, it unlocks camera features that simply aren't possible on a standard glass slab:
- Pro Selfies: You can take selfies using the high-end 48MP main rear camera while using the outer display as your live viewfinder.
- Duo Preview: When taking a picture of someone else, they can see a live preview of how they look on the outer screen to help frame their pose.
- Smart Take (No More Missing the Group Shot): Instead of sprinting across the room to beat a 10-second timer, you can set the phone down; on-device AI will detect when everyone is in place and posing, and then snap the picture automatically.

A20 Pro Performance and All-Day Battery
Under the hood, the iPhone Duo is powered by the A20 Pro chip. Built on a tiny 2-nanometer process, it delivers up to 35 percent faster sustained speeds and twice the power for on-device AI tasks, like Apple Intelligence and the new conversational Siri AI.
To keep the phone cool under heavy gaming or video editing, Apple connected the chip directly to a custom vapour chamber. Think of it like a built-in radiator that quickly pulls heat away from the processor, so performance never stutters.
Battery-wise, Apple split the power across two separate batteries (one in each half of the phone). You get up to 24 hours of mixed everyday use, up to 31 hours of video on the big inner screen, and up to 44 hours on the outer display. When you do run low, fast charging gets you to 50 percent in roughly 20 minutes.
iOS 27: Multitasking Made Simple
The software on iPhone Duo is reimagined to take advantage of the extra real estate:
- Split View: For the first time on an iPhone, you can run two full apps side-by-side. That means you can check sports scores while chatting in Messages, or compare documents while browsing Safari.
- Side Controls: Navigation bars, the app dock, and Lock Screen buttons move to the side of the display, so your content has plenty of vertical breathing room.
- All-Day StandBy: Set the phone down folded on your desk, and it acts as a standalone desk clock, live calendar, or digital picture frame without needing to be plugged in.
