The iPad Mini is an unsung hero among the iPad line, but with the latest model being revealed, people may be singing a different tune.

The new 8.5-inch model is thinner and has a powerful enough processor to turn this into a premium device for gaming on the go.

OLED Upgrades and a Thinner, Lighter Chassis

With shrunken bezels and a thinner profile the iPad Mini is poised to be a sleek tablet.

Despite keeping the exact same physical footprint as before, Apple shaved bezel borders down by 24 percent to expand the panel from 8.3 inches to 8.5 inches.

Here is what the display upgrade actually means in daily use:

  • True Blacks and Higher Brightness: Switching to OLED means pixels can fully shut off, providing a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio that eliminates backlight bleed. Peak brightness reaches up to 1,200 nits outdoors (double the previous model), with 600 nits sustained across both SDR and HDR content.
  • 1-Nit Minimum Floor: At the opposite end, the screen can dim down to just 1 nit, making late-night reading in bed or low-light cockpit use far easier on the eyes.
  • Nano-Texture Option: Available on higher-tier configurations, buyers can opt for etched nano-texture glass to diffuse harsh reflections and overhead glare when working outside.
  • IP67 Rating and 5.4 mm Thickness: The chassis drops down to an ultra-svelte 5.4 mm and sheds weight down to 255 grams. More importantly, it gains an IP67 rating, meaning it can withstand everyday dust exposure and accidental splashes or dunks in up to 1 metre of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

The option of a nano-texture option is great news as we previously only have been able to experience on Apple's premium devices (like iPhone Duo, MacBook Pro, and iPad Pro). If you see this in person it's a love-it-or-hate-it emotion, but the way it cuts down on glare is undeniable.

A20 Pro Silicon: 2nm Efficiency and Local Compute

iPad Mini will be available in two colours: Midnight and Starlight.

Powering the tablet is Apple's first 2-nanometer processor, the A20 Pro. Drawing architectural cues from the desktop M-series, the chip pairs a 6-core CPU with a 7-core GPU featuring hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading for 3D modeling and high-end gaming.

For local AI and on-device processing:

  • Neural Accelerators in the GPU: Dedicated accelerators sit directly inside each GPU core, providing a 4.5x boost for local prompt processing and creative machine-learning utilities.
  • Dual 16-Core Neural Engine on 512GB Tier: If you step up to the 512GB model, Apple packs in a 32-core NPU array that doubles machine-learning throughput for generative apps like Draw Things and on-device image editing.

For people who don't consider themselves AI users, chances are more and more apps in the coming years will expect to be able to tap into some level of on-board neural processing (the part of a chip on computers and tablets that allows AI tasks to run quickly) so this is a nice future-proofing upgrade for the tablet.

Acoustic Display, Repositioned Camera, and Custom Chips

iPad Mini will support both the Apple Pencil Pro and the Apple Pencil with USB-C.

Apple also addressed several long-standing functional quirks:

  • Sound Through the Screen: Rather than traditional speaker grilles on the edges that can let in water, the iPad mini uses an "Acoustic Display." Woofers vibrate through the screen assembly for punchier low end, while hidden tweeters handle high frequencies, all sealed tightly to support the IP67 ingress rating.
  • Landscape Front Camera: The 12MP Center Stage camera finally moves to the landscape long edge, making video calls and FaceTime feel natural rather than angled off to the side when propped up horizontally.
  • Apple N1 and C2 Silicon: In-house chips handle connectivity, with the N1 chip managing Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, while cellular models run the C2 modem for up to 50 percent faster mobile data throughput.

Personally, iPad Mini is my go-to tablet when I am the MC or host for events. The formfactor is perfect for this kind of things, and I've also enjoyed using it with remote play gaming when paired with a quality mobile controller.

With the larger 8.5-inch OLED screen, an ultra-thin 5.4 mm profile, official water and dust resistance, and serious mobile muscle courtesy of the brand-new A20 Pro chip, the iPad Mini may just shift its position from being an underdog in the iPad lineup.
