Microsoft had a big day of reaveals introducing the world to a more powerful hardware lineup. The Surface Laptop Ultra and the compact Surface RTX Spark Dev Box will cover pro users and developers who demand the most power from their work machines.
Built directly in partnership with NVIDIA, these flagship devices introduce a brand-new "hybrid intelligence" architecture designed to run heavyweight local AI models, 3D workloads, and demanding creative projects directly on your desk or on the go.
Here is everything Canadians need to know about the new hardware, port updates, and availability.
1. Surface Laptop Ultra: NVIDIA RTX Spark Powerhouse
The star of today's announcement is the Surface Laptop Ultra, a powerhouse encased in a sleek chassis that measures under 18 mm thin and weighs under 4.5 lbs. Instead of relying purely on conventional laptop chips, Microsoft re-architected the system around the NVIDIA RTX Spark Superchip.
You can read all about the new Surface Lapto Ultra here but here's a few quick highlights:
Key Hardware Highlights:
- The Silicon Engine: Integrates an NVIDIA Grace CPU (up to 20 cores), an NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU (up to 6,144 cores), and up to 128 GB of unified memory.
- Massive Local AI Compute: Capable of delivering up to 1 petaflop of theoretical FP4 AI performance, letting developers run large models exceeding 120 billion parameters locally without paying cloud token fees.
- PixelSense Ultra Touchscreen: A 15-inch display boasting peak HDR brightness of 2,000 nits (up to 25% brighter peak HDR than Apple's MacBook Pro M5). Note: It is optimized strictly for touch; Surface Pen support is not included.
- Thermal Upgrades: A re-engineered thermal architecture delivers up to 2.5x more thermal dissipation capacity for sustained rendering and gaming.
- Colors & Serviceability: Finished in Platinum and Nightfall, featuring user-removable storage and a 30% larger haptic touchpad.
2. World's First Built-In Magnetic USB-C Charging
If you've ever tripped over a charging cord and pulled your Surface laptop to the ground, this won't be a problem with the new Ultra Model thanks to something called Magnetic Connect.
Rather than using a proprietary slot for charging (remember the old Surface Connect port?), Microsoft built magnetic snap-and-release charging directly into a standard USB-C port on the right side of the machine:
- The included charging cable docks magnetically to provide quick power and breaks away cleanly if snagged.
- The USB-C connector can transfer video, data, and connect to peripherals aside from carrying power
Microsoft Surface Ultra Port selection round-up:
- 3x USB-C ports (including the Magnetic Connect port)
- 1x USB-A port
- 1x HDMI out (drives up to three 4K displays)
- Full-size SD card reader
- 3.5 mm headphone jack
3. Surface RTX Spark Dev Box: Deskside AI Compute
For technical teams, data scientists, and developers wanting a dedicated machine on the desk, Microsoft introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box.
This small-form-factor desktop packs the same NVIDIA RTX Spark platform with up to 128 GB of unified memory.
It comes pre-configured out of the box with development tools like Visual Studio Code, WSL, Docker/Python/Node runtimes, and local GitHub Copilot integration running alongside Microsoft's newly launched Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) for secure, policy-isolated local AI agents.
Canadian Pricing, Pre-Orders & Availability
Both devices are open for pre-orders today, with local shipping details for Canada as follows:
Surface Laptop Ultra:
- Canadian Pricing: Starts at CAD $3,899.99 (US MSRP $2,599).
- Release Date: Available in Canada starting October 16, 2026.
- Trade-in Promo: Microsoft is offering a direct trade-in promotion in Canada and the U.S., offering up to CAD $1,300 cash back when trading in a qualifying eligible MacBook Pro through November 23, 2026.
Surface RTX Spark Dev Box:
- Priced at $5,999 USD and begins shipping this November. Note that initial Dev Box orders are exclusively launching via Microsoft.com in the U.S. first, with broader rollout plans to follow.
For most Canadians in their everyday uses, the lack of Surface RTX Spark Dev Box availability at launch is no big deal (it's not geared for "regular" folks). But the Surface Laptop Ultra sounds very intereting for users who are doing resource-heavy tasks like running local LLMs or 3D animations.
At this point, Microsoft hasn't revealed any updates to their regular Surface models other than ushering in the new Ultra laptop to expand the available choices.
