Netflix Increases Canadian Pricing - Here's some FREE TV streaming options
Save those twoonies, because Netflix wants 'em! The streaming service has announced price increases in several countries and Canada will see price increases on all membership plan tiers.
Effective as of January 21, 2025, all ad-supported and ad-free tiers will cost more in Canada.
How Much Does Netflix Cost In Canada?
- Standard Plan with ads $7.99 (increase of $2.00)
- Standard Plan without ads $18.99 (increase of $2.50)
- Premium Plan $23.99 (increase of $3.00)
As part of Netflix's efforts to crack down on password sharing, they introduced the option to add up to two additional members to your account for $5.99 per month. This pricing hasn't changed.
Best Netflix Alternatives In Canada
There are some great shows, documentaries, and movies on Netflix, but as the price creeps up every few years (the last price increase came in 2022 for Canadians) it may have you considering other options.
In our household, Netflix went from an always-on subscription to a once or twice a year thing.
During the times I don't have Netflix it's given me a chance to explore some other options including the ad-supported, free streaming options. I'll share a few of my favourites below:
Tubi
Tubi has a mix of live and on demand content that you can access from your phone, tablet, computer, or smart TV box/stick. You can watch without registering or creating account, however, it's worth it to make an account and then it will keep track of your history and allow you to resume shows and movies between different devices. The selection of Live TV is simliar to other services with shows like American Pickers, Baywatch, and Unsolved Mysteries, but Tubi has a very nice Kids viewing section to organize their family friendly content.
PlutoTV
Of the straight-up free options included, this is a personal favourite. There's a decent amount of variety, but the Live TV guide is really well organized by category, allowing you to quickly hop to kids favourites or select 24/7 channels of amazing series like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! It can be installed as a smart TV app or accessed through your phone or browser for live and on-demand viewing. You'll find series like Star Trek, Who's The Boss, and South Park.
CBC Gem
CBC Gem has paid and free tiers. The main difference with the paid tier is the eliminatino of ads and access to CBC News Network. However the content on the free tier isn't limited compared to the paid version. You'll find the full series of Schitt's Creek, seasons of Peppa Pig, and plenty of Canadian classics like Murdock Mysteries. With the smart TV app you can browse and view without an account, but you won't be able to label shows as favourites or pickup from where you left off across devices unless you make a free account.
Roku TV Channel
This channel is free; however, you can only access it if you have a Roku TV streamer, a Roku TV streaming stick, or a television with Roku TV as the smart TV software. But honestly, it's worth it to buy one of these three things to get access to the free content on the Roku TV channel. The TV in my gym area is a Hinsense Roku TV and I love the selection of movies and shows on here. The entire series of the Canadian Classic The Raccoons is streaming on this app. There's also throwback gems from the 80s & 90s like the Kids movie Little Nemo in Slumberland, plus plenty of more modern movies and shows you can enjoy on demand, and their own original series like the Spiderwick Choronicles.
Samsung TV Plus
Like the previous selection in this list, Samsung TV Plus is free...but you need to have a Samsung Smart TV. Once you do, you'll be able to browse through a large collection of Live TV, though it's a very simliar offering to what you'd find in the Live section of free apps like Tubi. There is a lovely fireplace channel, which is nice to put on in the background for ambiance if you're puttering around the house or working in your home office. However, the ads on this service shatter that ambiance regularly, and there's no way to have an ad-free Samsung TV experience. Of the options listed, this one isn't quite as good as some of the other choices (selection is more limited, navigating the menu is a little clunky). If you have a relatively new Samsung smart TV, feel free to check it out (since it's included anyway) but for a better "free" TV experience you may want to check out some of the other options we've listed.
The quality and variety of the various free streaming options vary quite a bit, but when combined, there's quite a treasure trove of content for movies, TV shows, and kid-friendly programming.
With the most recent Netflix price increase, it might be worthwhile to investigate some of the free TV streaming options available to Canadians.
