The Pixel 9a is on its way to Canada and if you're worried about a price bump - don't be! In fact, Google's eliminated many bumps from this device.
The "a" series devices are Google's lower cost phone series and have been boasting big features for less cash since the Pixel 6a
With the Pixel 9a we're seeing many of the best features from the Pixel 9, in some new colour options and a flatter form.
Pixel 9a main features
Cameras:
The pixel 9a has two rear cameras and one front-facing camera. Unlike past Pixels, the camera bump looks to be non-existent! The device is shown to be nearly flat on the back. The dual rear cameras are 48MP and 13MP (the Pixel 9 has 50 MP wide 48 MP ultrawide cameras for reference) and the selfie cam is 13MP.
Camera features:
For the first time on a Pixel a-series phone we get macro focus to bring out tiny details when you're snapping close up photos. We also get AI powered photo feature Add Me introduced with the Pixel 9 ((and explained here)https://www.geekingout.ca/add-me-pixel-9s-best-photo-feature) alongside the Magic Editor and Best Take photo features.
Battery:
Google says the Pixel 9a battery will last 30 hours! This is an incredible feat, but since the Pixel 9 battery has served me extremely well and accurate to its 24-hour rating, I have no reason to doubt Google's projections for this phone.
Colours:
The Pixel 9a offers two classy colours and two fun colours! Porcelain and Obsidian (white and black) are available for a more muted look. But if you want a punch of colour the Pixel 9a comes in Iris (purple) and Peony (which was introduced with the launch of the Pixel 9).
When does the Pixel 9a come out in Canada?
The exact timing of the phone hasn't been revealed, but it will be arriving in April of 2025. This phone is feature-rich. So, If you've been longing for a Pixel 9 but held off for whatever reason, now is your chance to experience many of that phone's benefits with a smaller price tag.

The Pixel 9a punches above its price when it comes to features and specs. WIth a 120hz display, 30 hour battery life, a 48MP primary camera, and the same Tensor G4 processor you'll find in the Pixel 9, this is a great phone at a great price.
In Canada the phone retails for $679 – that's the same price as the previous Pixel 8a. The phones have come a long way since they first came out (as you can see from this video below of the original 6a):
