We usually have to make a tough choice with smartphones: give up our data to Big Tech for the convenience of modern apps, or use a "dumbphone" that protects our privacy but leaves us without maps, music, or ride-sharing apps.
Punkt., the Swiss brand known for minimalist design, is back at CES 2026 to prove you don't have to choose. Their new MC03 smartphone is designed to give you total control over your digital life by physically splitting the phone's software into two distinct zones.
The Vault vs. The Wild Web
The MC03 runs on a unique operating system called AphyOS that divides the phone into two specific areas, giving you the best of both worlds:
- The Vault: This is your secure enclave. It only runs rigorously tested, Punkt.-approved apps that don't spy on you.
- The Wild Web: Real life happens, and sometimes you just need an app that isn't privacy-focused. This zone lets you install standard apps (like those found on the Google Play Store). The difference here is that the phone wraps these apps in strict safeguards to prevent them from "triangulating" your data or sharing information you didn't agree to.
The Proton Connection
Punkt. and Proton are both leaders in the "Swiss Tech" movement, which believes you should pay for services to keep your data private, rather than paying with your data. The MC03 integrates Proton's full suite—Mail, VPN, Drive, and Pass—directly into the secure Vault, giving you an ecosystem of privacy right out of the box.
German Engineering Meets Swiss Privacy
Beyond the software, the hardware is impressive and built to last. Manufactured in Germany, the device focuses on repairability and sustainability.
It features a 120Hz OLED display for a smooth visual experience and—in a rare move for modern phones—a removable 5200mAh battery. That means when the battery eventually degrades, you can swap it out yourself instead of buying a whole new phone. It's also rated IP68 for water and dust resistance, so it's durable enough for daily life.
A really cool and easy-to-use feature is the Data and Carbon Ledger. It's available for every single app you download on your phone and gives you an easy-to-understand dial that you turn based on the level of permissions you want to give to an app. This means you're never worried about the fine print in the Terms and Conditions you promptly ignored in the Google Play Store. Instead, you know on an app-by-app basis how much info you're sharing with the company.
Pricing and The Cost of Privacy
Punkt. operates on the motto: "If you don't pay for a product, you are the product". Because they aren't selling your data to advertisers, the phone comes with a subscription model to maintain the secure OS.
This can be a tough pill to swallow for people who are coming from a traditional Android phone. We're not used to paying for an OS. But the truth is you're paying for the OS on most devices because of the data you're sharing with the big tech company. In the case of punkt. they're just being upfront and offering a different option to customers.
The device costs $699 (USD), which includes a 12-month subscription to AphyOS. After the first year, the subscription runs about $9.99 per month to keep your data secure and the OS updated.
Pre-orders are open now, with North American deliveries starting in Spring 2026.
Is the ability to switch between a "secure mode" and a "standard app mode" the feature that would finally get you to switch away from iPhone or Android? Let me know your thoughts on this phone by reaching out on Instagram.
