Apple is kicking off its next era of smartphones with the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Announced on September 9, 2026, the latest flagship lineup brings huge upgrades to the features most people use every single day: the camera, battery life, overall speed, and built-in AI intelligence.
If you've been holding onto an older iPhone and wondering if now is finally the time to upgrade, Apple has packed these new Pro models with some genuinely practical improvements that aim to make everyday tasks and photo-taking much easier.
When does the iPhone 18 Pro come out and how much is it in Canada?
Pre-orders for both models begin Saturday, September 12, 2026, with official in-store availability starting Friday, September 18, 2026.
Here is how the Canadian pricing breaks down for base models (256GB storage):
- iPhone 18 Pro: Starts at $1,749 CAD (or $72.87/mo for 24 months)
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: Starts at $1,899 CAD (or $79.12/mo for 24 months)
Both phones come in four finishes: black, silver, glacier, and an all-new burgundy.
What's new with the iPhone 18 Pro camera?
The standout headline here is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera, which features variable aperture for the first time in an iPhone.
If you aren't a photo geek, think of the aperture like the pupil of a human eye. It opens up to let in more light when it's dark, and shrinks when it's bright to keep details sharp.
- Variable Aperture: Automatically adjusts for depth-of-field and lighting using six tiny internal blades, meaning better low-light photos, sharper background detail in large group shots, and customizable creative blur.
- Pro Controls: A new layout in the Camera app that gives you quick manual access to settings like shutter speed, white balance, and lens aperture without digging through buried menus.
- Upgraded Video & Audio: You can now record 4K Dolby Vision time-lapses, apply Cinematic background blur after you've already shot a video (up to 60 fps), and use smarter Audio Mix tools to isolate music or enhance voices.
Apple Reference Image & Photo Authenticity
With AI-generated images popping up everywhere, telling real photos apart from fake ones can be tricky. Apple is introducing Apple Reference Image, a feature that signs every pixel captured by the main camera sensor. It creates an unalterable "digital negative" side-by-side with your photo so you can easily prove a picture is original and unedited.
Dynamic Island gets an upgrade
Apple has physically redesigned the display technology behind the Dynamic Island—the pill-shaped cutout at the top of your screen. It now takes up slightly less space while fitting more information.
- Triple Live Activities: The new Dynamic Island can now track and display up to three Live Activities at once (like keeping an eye on your food delivery, flight status, and sports score simultaneously) without hiding Face ID capabilities.
A20 Pro Chip: Fast performance & cooler design
At the heart of both phones is the brand-new A20 Pro processor. Built on a tiny 2-nanometer process, it delivers faster graphics rendering (up to 40% faster than last year's A19 Pro) and double the AI processing power.
What it means for you: Apps will launch instantly, demanding 3D mobile games will run with console-like smoothness, and on-device AI requests will process in the blink of an eye.
Vapour Chamber Cooling: Apple redesigned the internal cooling structure with a new vapour chamber that has three times the surface area of the previous generation. This keeps the phone cool in your hands even during intense gaming sessions or heavy video editing.
Huge battery life gains (especially for eSIM users)
Battery life is taking its biggest leap forward yet on an iPhone.
- iPhone 18 Pro: Up to 36 hours of video playback. A quick fast-charge setup can get you up to 50% battery in about 15 minutes wired (or 30 minutes wirelessly).
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: Up to 45 hours of video playback. Five minutes of wired charging gives you roughly seven hours of video playback!
- The eSIM Advantage: In Canada, the iPhone 18 Pro models are eSIM-only (no physical SIM card slot). Apple freed up that internal physical space to fit a larger battery, granting up to two additional hours of playback compared to models elsewhere.
iOS 27, Siri AI, and Apple Intelligence
Launching alongside the new hardware is iOS 27 (available as a free update on Monday, September 14), which brings the next generation of Siri AI.
Powered by Apple Intelligence, the new Siri is significantly more conversational and context-aware. It can understand what's on your screen to take immediate action, pull information across your emails and messages when you ask a question, and even guide you through smart photo edits like spatial reframing or removing unwanted background objects.
New Accessories & Eco-Friendly Design
To go along with the new burgundy and glacier finishes, Apple launched **updated MagSafe cases and a new Wrist Strap **($39 CAD) and Crossbody Strap ($79 CAD) for hands-free carrying. The devices themselves are built with 40% total recycled content, including 100% recycled cobalt in the battery and 85% recycled aluminum in the enclosure.
