Apple's annual September hardware drop is here, and alongside new phones, the company officially took the wraps off the brand-new Apple Watch Series 12 and its rugged sibling, the Apple Watch Ultra 4.
Both models get an engine upgrade with the all-new S11 chip, a completely redesigned Health Sensing System, and some genuinely wild audio features designed to save your memory in real-life conversations.
Let's break down the news!
When Do the New Apple Watches Come Out?
Pre-orders for both Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are live today through the Apple website, with both arriving in stores on Friday, September 18.
- Apple Watch Series 12: Starts at $549 CAD.
- Apple Watch Ultra 4: Starts at $1,099 CAD.
The Big Upgrade: Health Sensing & Daily Readiness
Health tracking has always been the bread and butter of the Apple Watch, but this year's sensor redesign brings the biggest jump in day-to-day utility we've seen in a while.
Pinpoint Heart Tracking & Recovery HRV
The optical heart sensor on the back now uses larger, more power-efficient green LEDs that check your pulse every single five seconds all day.
On top of that, your Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is sampled up to 24 times more often.
- High HRV generally indicates your nervous system is relaxed, rested, and ready to go.
- Low HRV is your body's early warning light for physical exhaustion, stress, or coming down with a bug.
By checking daytime vitals and comparing your Recovery HRV against your baseline while you sleep, the watch can flag when your body is under stress before you even feel run down.
A Built-in Readiness Score
Borrowing a trick from dedicated recovery trackers, Apple now gives you an official readiness score from 0 to 10 every morning.
Think of it like a weather forecast for your body: It factors in your sleep quality, training load, and vitals, giving you an actionable recommendation—Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. It takes all the guesswork out of whether today should be an intense workout day or an easy walk.
Audio Intelligence: Can Your Watch Help You Remember Conversations?
Powered by the new S11 chip and Apple Intelligence, Series 12 and Ultra 4 introduce a new category of tools called Audio Intelligence (launching in beta later this Fall):
- Live Rewind: Have you ever completely zoned out while someone was speaking to you? A double press of the Digital Crown pulls up a text snippet of the last 15 seconds of the conversation right on your screen, so you can catch what was said. To keep things polite and transparent, the watch plays a clear chime and shows an on-screen visual whenever you trigger it.
- Siri Recap: If you're stuck in a meeting or chatting through project ideas, turning on Siri Recap automatically creates high-level bullet points and key takeaways in the Siri app.
- Sound Recognition: For accessibility, your watch can now detect critical noises—like alarms, doorbells, or a crying baby—and send you haptic alerts even if your phone is in another room.
Apple is handling this with strict privacy: all audio processing happens in an isolated hardware compartment on the watch called the Secure Exclave, meaning raw audio recordings are never saved, shared, or sent to the Cloud.
Apple Watch Series 12: Faster Charging and Tougher Glass
For everyday wearers, Series 12 brings several handy quality-of-life updates:
- 15-Minute Quick Charge: Plugging in for just 15 minutes adds up to 12 hours of battery life—perfect for a quick boost while you get ready in the morning.
- Extended Workouts: Delivers up to 10 hours of outdoor workout tracking (a 25% bump over last gen) and 24 hours of everyday use.
- Ceramic Shield 2: The aluminum models feature glass that is 60 percent tougher against everyday bumps and scratches.
- New Finishes: Available in 42mm and 46mm sizes across aluminum (dark bronze, black, light gold, space grey), radiant gold or natural titanium, and a return of ceramic in pearl white and night blue.
Apple Watch Ultra 4: An Absolute Battery Monster
If you spend weekends in the woods or training for long distances, Ultra 4 packs serious endurance improvements:
- 50-Hour Standard Battery: Delivers more than two full days of typical use, stretching to 84 hours in Low Power Mode.
- 45-Hour Workout Mode: In Max Extended Workout mode, you get up to 45 hours of outdoor run/hike tracking with GPS pings every single second—plenty of battery to tackle a 100-mile ultra-marathon without dying.
- Lightning Fast Top-Ups: A quick 15-minute charge puts 18 hours of juice back on the watch.
- Translucent Bands & Hermès: Alongside black and natural titanium cases, Ultra 4 introduces cool new translucent silicone Ocean Bands and an ultra-luxe Hermès edition with an extending wetsuit titanium band.
What's Coming in watchOS 27?
Launching on Monday, September 14, watchOS 27 brings several updates to both models:
- One-Handed Navigation: A single-handed tap gesture (tapping your thumb and index finger together) lets you select widgets in the Smart Stack.
- Pinpoint Step Counting: Redesigned machine learning algorithms make indoor and outdoor distance tracking more accurate than ever, complete with a dedicated live Steps watch-face complication.
- Cycle Tracking Updates: Built-in tracking and insights now include support for perimenopause and menopause.
Are the Apple Watch Series 12 & Ultra 4 Worth the Upgrade?
Whether you want the sleek everyday Series 12 or the marathon-ready Ultra 4, both of these watches pack game-changing recovery insights, fast charging, and practical conversation tools.
